Basingstoke to London: 42 minutes, first train 04:54

The fastest train from Basingstoke to London Waterloo takes 42 minutes, and there is nothing clever about getting it: the service is South Western Railway, it is direct, and in the morning peak there are several trains an hour that do the trip in under 50 minutes. The first departure of the day is 04:54, the first fast one is 05:40, and the last train back out of Waterloo is 23:48.

What follows was checked against the live timetable and fare tables for Monday 10 August 2026, and against South Western Railway’s own station page for parking and facilities. Times shift a little with the timetable; the fares, the parking and the shape of the service do not move as often.

What the journey actually looks like

Basingstoke is on the South West Main Line, 48 miles out of Waterloo, and it is one of the few towns of its size where the fast trains genuinely stop. On a weekday morning:

• 04:54 → 06:11 (1h 17m). The first train of the day, and a stopper.
• 05:40 → 06:34 (54m) and 05:54 → 06:42 (48m). The first two that are worth setting an alarm for.
• 06:51 → 07:36 (45m), 07:05 → 07:47 (42m, the fastest of the morning), 07:29 → 08:14 (45m).
• 07:59 → 08:43 (44m), 08:29 → 09:18 (49m), 08:35 → 09:25 (50m).

Mixed in with those are semi-fast services taking 1h to 1h 20m, which stop at Winchester, Eastleigh or the Woking locals. They look identical on the departure board and they are not the same journey. If you are commuting, learn the two or three fast paths and stick to them.

Coming home, the useful last departures from Waterloo are 23:40 (arriving 00:41) and 23:48 (arriving 01:07, the slow one). There is no later train.

What it costs

Walk-up fares from Basingstoke, checked for 10 August 2026:

• Anytime Day Single, via Woking: £31.10. The any-permitted-route version is £34.50.
• Anytime Day Return, via Woking: £54.60. Any route, £64.80.
• Anytime Day Travelcard, via Woking: £71.00. That is the one to buy if you are using the Tube all day.

Season tickets, from Trainline:

• Annual, Basingstoke to London Terminals via Woking: £5,808. Weekly £145.20, monthly £557.60.
• Annual, any permitted route: £5,856.
• Annual with a Zones 1-6 Travelcard, via Woking: £6,908. Any route, £6,952.

The “via Woking” restriction saves £48 a year and costs you nothing in practice, because every fast Waterloo train goes that way anyway.

Parking at the station

The station car parks are Bunnian Place and the North Yard multi-storey, 1,207 spaces between them, both operated by the train company rather than the council. The tariff:

There are 18 electric vehicle charging points in the North Yard multi-storey. The RingGo codes are 2012 for Bunnian Place and 2001 for North Yard, and the hourly rate of £1.80 is only available from midday and only through RingGo. A separate 20-space premium car park charges £14.00 peak and £7.00 off-peak.

Blue Badge holders park free if they register in advance with the operator.

Where else the trains go

Basingstoke is a junction, not a branch terminus, and the non-London services are the reason a lot of people live here:

• Winchester: 15 to 18 minutes. Roughly four an hour.
• Reading: 20 to 27 minutes, which puts the Elizabeth line and the Great Western main line inside half an hour.
• Southampton Central: 31 to 33 minutes.

Between Waterloo, Reading and Southampton, Basingstoke has three main-line destinations inside 45 minutes. Very few towns of 110,000 people can say that, and it is a large part of why the borough is on the receiving end of a housing target of 1,152 homes a year.

At the station

Toilets are on every platform, with a Changing Places facility and National Key Scheme accessible toilets on Platform 1, Platforms 2/3 and Platform 4 (station staff hold a radar key). Waiting rooms are open 24 hours on all platforms. There is Wi-Fi, cash machines, shops and cafés.

The taxi rank is opposite the station entrance on Braine L’Alleud Road; the drop-off and pick-up point is on the station side, via Clifton Terrace. There is no lost property office at Basingstoke, so anything left on a train goes to Waterloo.

Before you travel

• Check whether your train is fast or semi-fast. The gap between the 42-minute and the 1h 20m service is bigger than the gap between most people’s commutes.
• Buy the “via Woking” ticket. It is cheaper on every ticket type and it does not restrict any journey you were realistically going to make.
• If you drive in, buy the parking by the month or year. At £11.00 a peak day, five days a week for four weeks is £220 against a £153.30 monthly ticket.
• Live times are on South Western Railway, and engineering work is published on the same site well ahead of the weekend.
