Where we cover
Basingstoke itself is the centre of the patch, with Chineham, Brighton Hill, Popley, Buckskin and the other neighbourhoods around it, and then the borough’s villages and small towns: Oakley, Bramley, Overton, Whitchurch, Kingsclere and Tadley. North Hampshire more widely, out towards Alton and Andover, comes under different district councils, so where a story involves those places we say which authority is responsible rather than implying it is all one patch.
What we report
Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council’s planning register and committee papers, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the local rivers, and company filings in The Gazette. Hampshire County Council runs roads, schools and social care, and we name the right body rather than sending you to the wrong desk. Every fact links back to the original document.
Reorganisation: withdrawn for now
Updated 11 September 2026. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council was due to be abolished in April 2028 and replaced by a new North Hampshire Council, formed with Hart and Rushmoor. On 7 September 2026 the government withdrew that decision and began a review of the whole reorganisation programme, so the borough council carries on for now. Our report explains what changed. We will report each stage from the published papers, and keep the practical pages on this site pointing at whoever actually answers on the day you read them.
