Nine people aged 14 to 19 have been arrested over the Normanton Road stabbing on 7 September. All are on bail, none charged, and police still want witnesses.

Nine people have been arrested over the stabbing of a man in his 50s in Basingstoke on Monday 7 September. All nine have been bailed. Nobody has been charged.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary has published four statements about the investigation. Taken together, they record arrests continuing for ten days after the attack, of people aged from 14 to 19.

What the force says happened

Officers were called at 9.32pm on Monday 7 September to a report that a man had been found with stab wounds on Normanton Road, in the Oakridge area north of the town centre. The force says he had been assaulted on a footpath near Lyford Road, a few hundred metres to the south.

The man is in his 50s. He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and has since been discharged.

Who has been arrested

Every arrest was on suspicion of attempted murder. The force has published no names, and says nothing about any of the nine beyond age and home town.

  • 8 September, four arrests the night of the attack: a 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy, all from Basingstoke, and a 17-year-old boy from Newbury (force statement, 8 September)
  • 11 September, a fifth arrest: a 14-year-old boy from Basingstoke (11 September)
  • 15 September, two more: a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy, both from Basingstoke (15 September)
  • 17 September, two more: a 19-year-old man and a 16-year-old boy, both from Basingstoke (reported 18 September)

That is nine people in total. Six of them are under 18. Eight are from Basingstoke and one is from Newbury.

Each group was held in custody at first and bailed later. The most recent statement, on 18 September, describes the seven arrested earlier as “bailed with conditions” and the two arrested on 17 September as “released on police bail as enquiries continue”.

What has not been said

A good deal. The force has not said what it believes led to the attack, whether those arrested knew the injured man, or whether it is looking for anyone else.

It has not charged anyone. Checked on 21 September, the force’s own news pages carry no charging announcement in this case. An arrest is not a charge, and bail with conditions is not a finding of guilt.

What the crime figures show for that street

Police.uk publishes every recorded crime by street. It is the same data Hampshire Constabulary supplies, and it gives the background the statements do not.

Over the 11 months from September 2025 to July 2026, the most recent month published, police.uk records 25 crimes on Normanton Road itself. Those include seven violent crimes, three burglaries, three public order offences and two offences of possessing a weapon.

The wider Basingstoke North policing neighbourhood, which the force defines as Oakridge and Popley, recorded 2,208 crimes over the same 11 months, including 972 violent crimes and 32 of possessing a weapon.

Two cautions on those numbers. Police.uk places each crime at an anonymised map point near where it happened rather than at an exact address, so a street total covers a small area around the street. And the latest month on the site is July 2026, so the 7 September attack and anything that followed it will not appear in the published figures for some months yet.

The appeal, in the force’s words

Officers are still asking for witnesses. The statements ask three questions:

  • Were you in the area between 8.45pm and 10.30pm on Monday 7 September?
  • Did you witness the incident or any suspicious behaviour?
  • Do you have CCTV, dashcam or doorbell footage that could help?

What it means for you

If you live near Normanton Road, Lyford Road or Shooters Way and have a doorbell camera, the footage police want is from the evening of Monday 7 September, roughly 8.45pm to 10.30pm. Most systems overwrite after a few weeks, so if you have not checked yet it is worth doing now before it is lost.

If you know one of the young people arrested, remember what the record actually says: nine arrests, no charges, everyone bailed. Naming or accusing anyone on social media risks prejudicing a live investigation, and it is why this article carries no names.
